The hail record near Oklahoma City since Jan 1, 2024

These are trained-spotter, public and emergency-management hail reports logged by the National Weather Service forecast office in Norman, filtered to 37 miles of downtown Oklahoma City. A report is a point observation, not a survey of every roof, so hail can fall between reports and a report a mile away can still mean your roof was hit.

What size hail damages a roof?

Under 1" (pea to nickel): rarely damages a healthy shingle roof. Can dent soft metals and bruise a roof that is already old or brittle.
1" to 1.5" (quarter to ping pong ball): knocks granules loose, dents gutters, vents and AC fins. Older or south-facing slopes can bruise. Worth an inspection.
1.75" and up (golf ball, hen egg, baseball): functional damage is common: fractured shingle mats, exposed fiberglass, cracked skylights and vents. This is the range where insurers routinely approve replacement.

Wind speed, roof age, slope and shingle type all move these thresholds. The only way to know is to have the slopes walked and the soft metals checked, which is what the free inspection is for.

After a hailstorm in Oklahoma: what to do in order

  1. Write down the date and time and take dated photos of any dents in gutters, downspouts, AC fins, mailboxes, window screens and car roofs. These prove the storm reached your address.
  2. Do not climb on the roof. Hail-hit shingles are slick and bruised mats break underfoot. Have a roofer inspect from the roof with proper equipment.
  3. Read the "Duties After Loss" section of your policy. Most policies require prompt notice and many set a firm deadline from the date of the storm. When in doubt, notify your insurer now.
  4. Get an independent inspection before the adjuster visits. A roofer's photo report of every slope and every soft metal gives you and the adjuster the same evidence.
  5. Verify any roofer's Oklahoma CIB registration. Oklahoma requires roofing contractors to register with the Construction Industries Board and to show the registration number in advertising. Ask for it and check it.
  6. Walk away from anyone offering to "cover your deductible." That is an insurance-fraud red flag, and you remain responsible for the policy terms you signed.

Common questions

Does 1 inch hail damage a roof?

One-inch (quarter-size) hail can knock granules off asphalt shingles and dent gutters, vents and AC fins, and older roofs can bruise. Functional damage that insurers treat as a covered loss becomes common at roughly 1.75 inches (golf-ball size) and up. Roof age, slope and shingle type all change the threshold, so a report of 1 inch or larger within a mile or two of your home is reason to get the roof inspected.

How long do I have to report hail damage to my insurer in Oklahoma?

It depends on your policy. Most Oklahoma homeowner policies require prompt notice of a loss and many set a firm deadline measured from the date of the storm. Read the Duties After Loss section of your policy, and if you are unsure, call your insurer or agent now rather than waiting on an inspection.

Is the roof inspection free?

Yes. The independent local roofers we connect you with offer no-cost, no-obligation hail inspections. You decide whether to file a claim or do any work.

Who calls me after I submit the form?

An independent roofing contractor serving the Oklahoma City area. We are a referral service, not a contractor, and we may be paid by the contractor for the introduction. Ask any roofer for their Oklahoma Construction Industries Board registration number before you sign anything.
